Two goals from Daneel Ovtcharenko helped the Boys Hockey First XI get off to a great start at the Rankin Cup, New Zealand Hockey’s top-ranking secondary schoolboys tournament in Auckland, with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Bethlehem College at Papatoetoe.

On Monday, 31 August King’s opened the scoring in only the second minute when an excellent pass from Daniel Easton released Xavier Guy who rounded the goalkeeper and flicked home. Daneel Ovtcharenko made it 2-0 in the seventh minute when he touched home a Xavier Guy cross and Ovtcharenko added his second.  The team’s third came with a ferocious reverse stick shot after Arthur Rasmussen had stolen possession and to give him the opportunity in the fourteenth minute. Zander Fraser made it 4-0 with a flick from a penalty corner two minutes before the interval.

In the second half, King’s took their foot off the accelerator and Bethlehem reduced the deficit in the fourty first minute before well-worked goals by Oliver Paterson and Daniel Bayly sealed an impressive 6-1 victory for the team.

All players got good playing time and are looking forward to the next day of play - a double header. First up is an early start at 8.00am against Mt Albert Grammar School at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga. With 19mm of rain forecast for that time, it may be an interesting match! The team plays its second game and final pool match against St Kentigern College at 3.30pm at Papatoetoe.
