The Boys' First XI Hockey, missing Xavier Guy on duty with the Auckland Under-21s at the National Under-21 tournament in Dunedin, went down 0-2 to Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) at home on Wednesday, 4 May in their final practice match of the season.

Last year, the teams fought out two close encounters with King’s edging MAGS 3-2 at the Rankin Cup, but this year, MAGS, coached by Daniel Panchia, younger brother of Old Collegian and Black Stick Jared Panchia, was the physically stronger team and out-muscled the young King’s team.

The first half was evenly contested with Fergus Eadie pulling off some important saves in goal and Aiden Fraser and Kalpesh Morar showing their skills in the midfield, but the scores remained level at the interval. MAGS scored just after the break against the run of play but started to dominate the second half.

With 12 minutes remaining, King’s pushed hard for an equaliser and missed two good chances in one attack, before MAGS counter-attacked and scored at the other end.
