At the end of the July holidays, Tony Shaw successfully competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Case Competition for business planning as part of a team with students from other schools.

In each round of this national competition, his team was presented with a business case and their task was to create a plan outlining a course of action that would help the business increase their profit.

Whilst the first round required an online submission, for the semi-finals and finals they had to prepare and deliver a ten-minute strategic presentation to a panel of judges, which was then followed by a ten-minute question and answer session. In the finals, they were given four hours to prepare a case on Hong Kong Disneyland.

His team eventually won the entire competition, each person winning $500 in prize money.
