Friday 17 June 2016

On Wednesday, 15 June two King’s College choirs, the Chapel Choir and Kappella, competed in the Auckland Regional Big Sing competition at the Auckland Town Hall.

The Chapel Choir performed Legénda by Tchaikovsky, In Darkness And In Light by Mr Chris Artley, and Ain’t Judgin’ No Man.

The Chapel Choir received a Commended award.

Kappella performed Ubi Caritas by Ola Gjeilo, Dawn by Mr Chris Artley, and Bonse Aba which is a Zambian song of welcome.

Kappella received a Highly Commended award as well as the trophy for the Best Performance of a Piece by a New Zealand or Pacifica composer by a choir that has not participated in the Big Sing Finale in the past two years. This award was won by the Chapel Choir last year. Kappella won this award in 2016 for their song, Dawn.

Both groups competed against some of the very best schools in the Auckland region, including Diocesan School, Macleans College, Westlake Girls' and Boys' High Schools, Takapuna Grammar School, and many more.

A big thank you to Mrs Gina Sanders for all the work that she has done in directing the choirs, to Mr Chris Artley both for his work in accompanying the choirs and for writing the New Zealand compositions for each of the choirs, to Mr Paul Chan for his work accompanying the Chapel Choir, and to all the students involved in both choirs for their work and commitment to the groups.

The announcement of the 24 choirs nationally that have successfully made it through to the Finale in Dunedin will be made on Friday, 1 July. We wish both groups the best of luck!
