Visual Art and Design Head of Department Chas Foxall, Head of Photography Jesse Chester, Art teacher Amy Allan and Artist-in-Residence Michel Tuffery were invited by Otahuhu College’s Head of Art Rosemary Theunissen, to meet with Osmeivy Ortega Pacheco to discuss his work and printmaking processes. Havana-born Pacheco had been brought to New Zealand as part of a scholarship to work with students and teachers.
They learned that Pacheco had originally planned to become a lawyer but four years into his law degree he decided he wanted to study art instead. While he has travelled widely for further study and work, Pacheco always returned to traditional techniques to make intricate nature-inspired images that explore Cuba's environment and culture.
Mr Foxall said Mr Pacheco provided a valuable insight into printmaking which will be of great use to both schools’ art departments. As part of our close working relationship with Otahuhu College we look forward to continuing to hold more collaborative sessions like this.
