Every year a team of dedicated King’s College students put on a social for the intellectually handicapped community. This year the small IHC social committee chose the theme of “Under the Sea” and transformed the Great Hall into an underwater wonderland, decorating it with streamers, bright colours and an array of sea creatures.
The social kicked off at 6.00pm but much to our surprise, the IHC members began to arrive as early as 5.40pm! When the social began at 6.00pm it was not hard to get the IHC members up and dancing thanks to the amazing DJ of the night. The IHC members, staff and families came in all kinds of costumes from sailors to shrimps, mermaids and scuba divers.
It was a night filled with laughter, hugs, spot prizes, smiling and lots of dancing! I think that everyone that attended the social can say that seeing the smile on everyone’s faces made all the hard work worth it. It was a thoroughly rewarding experience for everyone involved and everyone there had a night they will be sure to remember.
It was such a humbling experience and for anyone who didn't make it to the social this year I urge you to attend next year. Thank you to all the students, staff, IHC carers and the IHC members who came along and made the night as special as it was. A big thanks also goes to Mrs Carrington and Reverend Wilder for all the help with executing our ideas and helping with organisation and the smooth running of the night.
