As an American water polo player, Maggie won a gold medal with the United States in the 2012 Summer Olympics and captained the United States team to another victory in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Students from Baradene College of the Sacred Heart, St Cuthbert’s College, Saint Kentigern College and Remuera Intermediate joined five King’s students for a group session with Maggie, lasting 90 minutes in the pool.
Director of Aquatics Jim Floerchinger organised the impromptu meet up after he realised Maggie was on holiday in New Zealand for three weeks, travelling the South Island and holding small clinics in the North Island.
“Maggie took the kids through a range of warm-ups and drills and happily answered any questions about her Olympic medalist experience,” says Jim. “It was a great chance for the kids to see just what hard work can achieve.”
Maggie will spend another couple of days in Auckland, visiting another two secondary schools before heading back to Stanford University to resume her training and studies.
The Auckland secondary school water polo season will resume in Term 1 2018.
