Scholarships
The King's Scholarships and Bursary programme is designed to foster the pursuit of excellence outlined in the College motto, 'Virtus Pollet' and to ensure a wide cross-section of entry, reflecting New Zeland society as a whole. Scholarships and bursaries are available each year, largely for those who would not otherwise be able to attend the College. Aspire ScholarshipsThe Aspire Scholarship is for students from low-medium income families who would like to attend a New Zealand private secondary school. The scholarship contributes up to $15,000 per year for private secondary school fees and up to $1,500 per year for course-related costs. Please note that all Scholarships and/or Bursary Awards are subject to annual review and may be withdrawn where performance is unsatisfactory. Boys entering Year 9Academic ScholarshipsFour Academic Scholarships are awarded for boys starting in Year 9. The primary criterion for these awards is the student's performance in the College's Scholarship exams held in May each year. Each Academic Scholarship covers 50% of the College's tuition fees for up to four years.Music Scholarships & BursariesCandidates for these awards will be auditioned by the Director of Music and will need to show proficiency (Grade 4 or better) in one or more instruments. The Music Scholarship covers 50% tuition fees for up to four years. Music Bursaries cover 25% tuition fees for up to four years and are subject to family means-testing. All candidates for Music Scholarships and Bursaries are expected to sit the College Entrance Exams, but need not sit the Academic Scholarship Exams. They will also be expected to take an active and willing part in performance music at the College.Boarding BursariesTwo boarding bursaries are awarded annually. These awards cover 100% boarding fees for up to four years and will be given to boys with strong all-round ability. These awards are subject to family means-testing. All candidates for Boarding Bursaries are expected to sit the College Entrance Examinations, but need not sit the Academic Scholarship Exams.NOTE: For rural boarding parents and students: a Boarding Bursary is available from the Ministry of Education for those rural students whose home is 4.8 kilometres from the nearest school or the nearest bus stop. Applications must be made to the Ministry not to the College. Full details are available on the Ministry website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/gbb LV Bruce Bursaries for Sons of Old CollegiansFunds are available to assist sons of Old Collegians in cases where there is financial need. These bursaries contribute up to $6000 per annum for up to two years with the option to renew for a further year. All candidates for LV Bruce Bursaries are expected to sit the College Entrance Examinations, but need not sit the Academic Scholarship Exams.We hope to be able to confirm offers by 01 June 2010. Please note that all those sitting the Scholarship Exam in May each year will be expected to pay a $100 processing fee. Students entering Year 10 and Above
