MUSIC TUITION AT THE COLLEGE
King’s College offers a wide range of instrumental music lessons. The Music Office is happy to answer queries from parents or guardians and you are asked to contact for further details on 276 0600 #745 in term time or email: music.admin@kingscollege.school.nz
All Year 9 students study Music as a subject within the modular system, but there is no instrumental component to this. Individual lessons are given at the College by a team of carefully selected and qualified visiting music teachers who are self-employed contractors. They will communicate directly with parents and bill parents directly at a standard fee.
Individual instrumental tuition is offered in: piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, French Horn, tuba, harp, guitar, (contemporary/classical/bass) percussion (kit and orchestral) and voice.
Regarding Music Tuition in school, parents are reminded to contact Karen Thompson, Music Secretary, on extension 745 to alter or amend difficult music lesson times. Sometimes lessons are scheduled in good faith out of school times which on occasion have conflicted with sport. If you come across these clashes, please let us know as soon as possible and generally before noon the previous day to avoid the independent tutors charging for this. All music lesson queries are handled by Karen not the music teaching staff; please use email music.admin@kingscollege.school.nz and copy the email to the tutor as necessary. Whilst the tutor should be notifed, the Music Office makes the final changes to the times.
EXTRAS & EXAMINATIONS
Sheet music is an extra cost, which is disbursed to the pupil account from time to time. Examination fees are also extra and are charged as applicable. Where possible the college operates as an examination centre for both Royal Schools, Trinity Guildhall and London College of Music Guitar syllabuses. For examination accompanying, the school will endeavour to provide an accompanist for each student at no extra cost and maintains close working links with all instrumentalists learning in school.
ASSESSMENT
The Music Tutros will normally send out reports twice a year to parents in Terms 2 and 4. Regular contact between tutors and parents is encouraged.
LESSON TIMES
The lessons are given at a fixed time each week, which means the rotating timetable at King’s enables a different subject to be missed each week. Priority is given to the senior students for out-of- class times. If for any reason the student is unable to make a lesson, the music office must be notified by noon the previous day to enable changes to be made, otherwise the lesson will be forfeited. If the teacher is away then the lesson will be made up and the fees adjusted accordingly. If the student is ill and the lesson cannot be rearranged, normally this is chargeable.
THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY NO MUSIC LESSONS DURING SCHOOL AND PUBLIC EXAMINATION WEEKS, unless by arrangement.
Instrumental hire is $50 per year where an instrument is available but there may be incidental charges relating to wear and tear e.g. dents etc. To request tuition please, fill in and return the tuition contract to the MUSIC OFFICE, which can be used at any point during your son/daughter’s enrolment, subject to fee changes. The standard rate is $55 (+GST where applicable) per hour or at a separate paired rate. For more specialised tuition, higher rates may apply, please enquire for arrangements.
