Environmental Society
The Environmental Society meets on Fridays 3.40-5.00pm, as well as on Sunday mornings 2-3 times a term (when Sunday Fatigues are calandered).
The main aim of the Society is to maintain and develop the riparian restoration area we commenced work on 5 years ago. This year’s projects will include focussing on:
1. Creating a learning area by the MacKay Trail beside the old Gym.
The society has made 5 six-seater benches and, once the ground has been levelled and mulched, these will be fixed in place. It is hoped that this area will then be used by a variety of departments, as well a lunch / meeting place for students outside of class times.
2. Restoring the Pond adjacent to the Volleyball Court
The major work here involves the dredging of silt that has accumulated over the last 24 months. This area will then be replanted and it is hoped will prove a haven for native frogs.
3. Maintaining the MacKay Trail & Friends’ Walkway
There is a large amount of weeding and mulching to be done to allow the natives we have planted over the last 5 years to continue to grow. The College gardening staff as well as Y9 classes, Selwyn House Environmental Project volunteers and students on Sunday Fats will be responsible for most of this work. The Environmental Society and Y10 students will be responsible for Native plant propagating and planting.
4. Butterfly conservation
A special focus this year will be to plant natives that encourage increased butterflies numbers at Kings College.
We will also be assisting with Mrs Delport with the College Recycling program. A new project this year will be making paper bricks from shredded paper
