Chamber Music
Each year the College forms a major chamber group to be the flagship group entering the National Chamber Music Competition. There are presently three chamber trios at the College, coached to a high standard of musicianship and recent successes are testimony to the hard work put in by all concerned. In 2006 the King's Trio, David Choi, Denny Liu and Edward King, reached the last eight finalists from hundreds of groups nationwide and played the Smetana G minor Piano Trio in Wellington Town Hall. In 2007, 'From Russia with Love' reached the last eight of the District Finals playing the haunting Arensky D minor Piano Trio in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall. International Coach, Boris Kipnis was trained at the Gorky Conservatoire and later in Moscow. His breadth and experience particularly with Russian music is prized within New Zealand. National Chamber Music Competition 2010The College was delighted to see our top string quartet, 'Frog Attack' playing the first movement of the Ravel Sring Quartet in F major, beat off some 90 other Auckland chamber groups to reach the last 16 places before selection for the national semi-finals. With strong groups from Westlake Girls and St Cuthberts, the foursome comprising John Choi, Jimmy Yang, Jason Chiang and Mark Chiang, still managed to beat off St Kentigern College, both main Auckland Grammar School groups and the Macleans Trio, along with a host of other large schools to arrive at what the adjudicators described as "polished performances". Thanks go to coach Judith Williams for this achievement. Year 10 Music Scholar Arnold Lee also gained a top-16 placing in his 'hybrid' piano trio group.
