THE MAJOR LEGACY

Remembering King’s through a bequest

To remember King’s College through a bequest is a way to make a permanent statement of what is valued in education. With the help of people with conviction and commitment, King’s College will be able to make a lasting difference to the lives and future of many King’s College students through scholarships.

The role of King’s is to develop the unique talents of each of our students and to provide an environment in which these gifts may be recognised and celebrated. Charles Major would be proud of what his school has become. We honour his wonderful contribution to the College by launching “The Major Legacy” initiative.

Charles Major was a visionary educator and under his stewardship land was purchased from the Auckland Golf Club with the plan to erect a permanent home for King’s. Major dreamed of a King’s with broad green playing fields fringed with green trees and fine buildings in a wide sweep flanking the gem of them all, the College Chapel. Major had 25 years direct involvement with the College as owner and principal shareholder, Headmaster and Board member.

Charles Major generously left in King’s College a magnificent legacy for future generations.

King’s College, where his spirit soared and his ashes lie, is Charles Major’s memorial. Major and King’s; King’s and Major; the two were intertwined.

In a central position in front of the Headmaster’s office there stands a statue that reminds all who pass along the oak fringed drive of the man who strove with such idealism, purpose and success to erect and mould a great school. Presented by an Old Collegian, it is of a school boy in shorts and on the four sides of the plinth are the following inscriptions:

C T Major, CBE, DSO, MA, BSc 1869-1938, Headmaster, Scholar. Soldier. By his wisdom and genius the traditions of a Public School were founded in King’s College. He lived a life of service and used to the full the great talents with which he was endowed. Virtus Pollet.

Peter Jackson, Past Chairman of the King’s College Board of Governors is the Patron of The Major Legacy bequest programme. He states “ there is no greater cause, in my view, than giving back to King’s, which many of us took for granted as 18 year old leavers, so many years ago. I have personally committed to this programme and commend it to those Old Collegians and friends of the College who are in a position to help. We are well advanced having a number of generous Old Collegians and friends already committed to the programme.”
