2008 academic results for King’s students were once again outstanding, and in almost all year groups for both CIE and NCEA, the results were the best ever achieved. A number of top scholars excelled at the very highest level and have gained world-class qualifications. Another gratifying aspect is the continued improvement of NCEA results and, in particular, the performance of boys in this qualification.
National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)
Level One
The NCEA Level one qualification was sat by 27 boys in Year 11 and 20 (74.1%), were awarded their Level one certificates. This was a significant improvement over the previous year’s result of 64%. Individual performances of note included top-scorer, George Oliver who gained 119 credits; Jarna Fuatavai - 117 credits; Nicholas Randell - 117 credits and Jordan Lay -116 credits. Others to achieve 100 credits or more were Benjamin Brooks, Charles Ballan-Rivette, Campbell Kerr, Lars-Peter Jakobsen, Dominic Mellsop and Ashton Dennis.
Level Two
Every year since 2004, achievement of the NCEA Level 2 qualification by King’s students has increased steadily, and this year was no exception. Level 2 certificates were gained by 49 students (86%) and this result represents the highest percentage achieved to date. Harry Scott achieved the highest score with 109 credits, while William Bayly, Elliott Taylor, Clare Findlay, Timothy Sutherland, Jessica Ah Kuoi and Anna Paine each gained at least 100 credits.
Level Three
Of the 44 students who sat NCEA Level 3, an outstanding 43 (97.9%) gained their NCEA Level 3 certificates while 90.9% gained University Entrance. Both percentages represent King’s best results ever and all nine girls gained both qualifications. Molly Anderson gained the highest number of credits (109), while others to excel included Ryan Emirali, Rachael Picot and Jesse Toto.
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)
IGCSE
The results from these examinations are also outstanding and parallel those from the previous year. 42.1% of all grades were ‘A’ (80% +) or better and 97.4% of all grades were ‘D’; (50% +) or better. Lance Green and Stephen Mackereth scored 100% in Literature in English - a superb performance! On top of that, Stephen, our best performing student in IGCSE, scored 99% in Chemistry, 97% in both Biology and Physics and 96% in Spanish Language. Ten other students gained at least 5 ‘A’ (90% +) grades. They were Jordan Karpik, James Roy, Christian Smith, Daniel Fitzpatrick, Lance Green, George Lowndes, Michael Mak, Eden Choi, William Coleman and Tony Liu.
AS Level
The majority of students in Year 12 and 13 sit AS Levels and the results gained contribute to University Entrance, therefore this qualification is very important. 73.3% of King’s Year 12 students have already gained University Entrance using this qualification and this is our best ever result. In 2007 the figure was 69.9%. Stephen Mackereth scored 100% in Mathematics. Ryan Brown, Sean Hewetson, Jonathan Choie, John Chen and Henry Watson each gained at least five ‘A’ grades.
A Levels
The supreme qualifications in the CIE system are A Levels and our top scholars in 2008 have performed exceptionally well. Dux, Ben Kornfeld, gained five A Level ‘A’ grades and a further ten students gained four A Level ‘A’ grades. They were Andrew Buchan, James Lee, Amy Lin, Ben Paterson, Jonathan Rea, Clarke Truscott, Tushar Sharma, Phillip de Latour, and Carling Simmons. These students have gained a qualification which is world-class and which represents scholarship of the very highest standard.
University Entrance Rates for School Leavers in 2008
The overall University Entrance rate, combining NCEA and CIE for all school leavers in 2008 was 95.4%. This is an outstanding achievement, perhaps the best ever! The University Entrance pass rate for NCEA students was 90.9%, while the pass rate for CIE students was 96.6%.
On receiving the results, Headmaster, Roy Kelley noted that he was delighted with the academic results in both the NCEA and CIE qualifications. “Congratulations to all students for their efforts in producing these excellent results,” he commented.
