King's Shines at Debating Awards

On Wednesday, 23 September at the Auckland Secondary Schools Debating Prizegiving, King’s came away with a number of top awards.

In an outstanding result for herself and the College, Amanda Ngo was awarded the prize for Best Speaker in the Premier Advanced Grade, making her the top school debater in the city.  This is an immense achievement in the face of some powerful competition from other schools.  She was consistently given extremely high speaker points over seven tough and demanding debates, and thoroughly deserved her cup.

Michael Daya-Winterbottom was named second best speaker in the Advanced Open Grade, in a field of more than 300 debaters, which is also a wonderful result, and he is keen to take his talent into Premier Advanced competition next year.

Courtney Varney was ninth best speaker in the Premier Advanced grade, and Liam Campbell was named among the top ten speakers in the Senior Open grade, where there is also a very large field.

Finally, our Teacher in Charge of Debating, Rev. Murray Bean was awarded the McGowan Trophy for "outstanding contribution by a teacher" to debating in the school.
