Action-Packed Week for King's Hockey

It was an action-packed week for King's hockey with good victories for the Boys' First XI, Girls' First XI, 15A and 15B teams.

Pick of the week was the Girls' First XI’s 2-0 victory over Mount Albert Grammar School on Thursday, 21 May in their important play-off game which ensured that they will be playing in the SuperCity competition this year. It was a goalless first half in which Mount Albert had the better chances but Alanna O’Riley made some important saves in goal to keep the scores level. The team stepped up its performance in the second half and two fantastic individual goals from Millie Baker gave the team the win. Players of the Day were Millie Baker and Holly Ford. This Thursday, the Girls' First XI play against Mount Roskill Grammar School at Mount Roskill.

Two excellent goals from Jordan van Riele and one each for Nic Hamlin, Arthur Rasmussen and Maxwell Rasmussen gave the Boys' First XI a hard-earned 5-0 victory over Auckland Grammar School 2nd XI last Wednesday, 20 May. Against a team that played all 11 players behind the ball, it took time for the team to break down the opposition defence and it was not until the last minute of the first half that the team broke the deadlock. The floodgates opened in the second half as the team added four further goals. This Wednesday, the team travels to Auckland Grammar School to play their First XI for its annual encounter. The game starts at 6.50pm at Auckland Grammar and the team would welcome any support the school can give.

Hat-tricks by Nicholas Wilson and Braden Jerram helped the 15A’s to continue their successful start to the season with an emphatic 9-0 victory over Onehunga High School. There were also goals from Player of the Day Hugo Reeves as well as Benjamin Irvine and Keiran Patel.

After another dominant display in goal from Deken Gillard, who pulled off a string of excellent saves, 15B beat Sancta Maria College 15A 3-1 in an impressive performance with a hat-trick of well-taken goals from Tom Buckley.

15C, including many players who have not played hockey before and playing in a competition against many first teams, continued their improvement but went down 6-0 to Mount Roskill Grammar School Under-15A. Player of the Day was Naixi Jiang.

The Girls' 2nd XI, in the same boat as the 15C team with many team members who have not played hockey before, made a marked improvement in performance in their second match going down 5-0 to Ormiston College First XI. Annabelle Cho was in great form in goal and Bella Mitchell was the Player of the Day.
