Advertising Captures Media Students

In the past couple of weeks, the King’s College NCEA Level 3 Media Studies class of 2015 has been lucky enough to find itself in the position of going inside the minds (and facilities) of some of the most sought after and prestigious advertising agencies in the country, and even in the world.

As advertising is a large chunk of what makes up the Level 3 syllabus, we thought it would be beneficial to us to get some first-hand research straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

The group started off at Spark PHD, a subset of the DDB advertising group, in which we were presented to about the industry itself and what goes on inside a firm on a day-to-day basis. We were asked to come up with a campaign of our own which we compared to the actual campaign Spark PHD came up with for the UK hair brand ’Toni & Guy’.

After we finished up at Spark, we headed off to the mothership, DDB. The facilities were breath-taking, and our eccentric and passionate presenter, a past King’s father, made for a great afternoon.

Two weeks later we headed off again, this time to the Auckland offices of the world’s largest firm, Ogilvy & Mather. The presenters were so passionate and full of life in regards to what they were saying, which was really inspiring for us, not to mention the incredible offices Ogilvy & Mather staff get to work in. After lunch, we headed to FCB (previously known as Draft FCB), also referred to as ‘The Change Agency’. Hearing the brands and accounts FCB get to work with, Air New Zealand and Coca-Cola among others, was almost unbelievable.

To say these visits have excited us is an understatement. This certainly has persuaded more than a few of us to enter the industry.
